Good to the Last Drop

There is a lot of excitement this week about Boulevard Brewing's Harvest Dance Wheat Wine hitting the shelves. I am excited too, but let's not forget there are other Missouri seasonal beers getting released too. Schlafly's Coffee Stout hit shelves earlier this week. The Coffee Stout is a blend of Schlafly's Oatmeal Stout with coffee from St. Louis' Kaldi’s Coffee Roasting Co.

Coffee and stouts naturally go hand in hand. Both have roasted and earthy flavors. One thing that I really like about this Coffee Stout is that it's not trying to be a Cappu-Mocha-Frapaccino-Espresso Stout. It's a straight up Black-Cuppa-Joe. When I drink coffee I don't want a bunch of crap in it. No sugar, no cream. Just coffee. I like coffee the way I like my women...(insert bad jokes here)
  • Dark and bitter.
  • Ground up and in the freezer.
  • Exotic with a great can
  • Slow roasted
  • With an ugly mug
  • Strong and a little nutty
Now that I got that out of my system, back to beer.

12 oz bottle poured into a shaker pint glass.  Tan head head is an inch thick, though it recedes quickly.  Thin lines of lacing runs down the glass.  Color is coffee brown (duh) that allows light through to create reddish highlights.  Smell is straight up black coffee.  Dark roasted, bold and bitter.

For an oatmeal stout base, it has a thinner body than what I would expect.  I wonder if the coffee blend has diluted the mix.  Oatmeal stouts usually have thick creamy texture.  However, by thinning the body it increases the drinkability for me.  It is less filling, and the ABV is 5.7%, well within session-able limits.  I would happily drink these all night.  Now I hope I can get to sleep.

Cheers and Beers!

I'm not going to write much about the coffee stout from Schlafly. If you want to recreate the experience, save yourself the $7 or so a sixer costs and go to your coffee pot at work around 2 o'clock. If there is just about a half cup of coffee in the pot and the burner is on pour the coffee in a Styrofoam cup, put the Styrofoam cup on the burner until the bottom starts to melt and place it in another Styrofoam cup. Make sure that some of the Styrofoam has melted into your coffee. Add ice then drink it once the ice has melted. The taste of this will bear a remarkable resemblance to the Schlafly Coffee Stout. Stay away, stay far away or come over to the Bull E. Vard mansion and pick up my remaining 5.

Bull - how do you like your coffee? If you like a bunch of sugar and cream in your coffee, I wouldn't reccomend this coffee stout. If you like 2 am diner coffee served to you by a surly waitress flicking cigarette ash at you, this may be a beer for you. I happen to like 2 am coffee and surly waitresses
