Beer-Run heads out to the farm

The Show-Me Beer Beer-Run pulls into Labadie, MO and Augusta Brewing Co. These guys are on the eastern side of the I-70 corridor, and the bottles are new to the shelves in KC. I had first tasted Augusta at a MoBev tasting and was very impressed.

750 ml corked and cages bottle, Batch #3 hand numbered. From a light pour a tall three fingers of head jumps up. The head drops down slightly slower than it went up and settles as a cap about the size of a quarter in the center and an edge around the glass. Color is a warm toasted amber with a hint of orange hues.

Up until now, I had thought I knew what saison "horse-blanket" aroma is. I was wrong. With this saison I can smell the earth, the hay, the fertilizer. It has a dark healthy loam of rich soil. And there is also a dry fruit sweetness like a baked apple. The taste has more of the grain, stone ground whole grain bread. Bread so fresh you can still feel the yest rising. There is also some clove and ginger spices that tingle in the finish.

Mouthfeel has a dry and gritty texture with a mild body underneath. This is a very filling beer, whereas many saisons are very light and crisp. Different and very nice.

Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" goes very well with a farmhouse ale.
